Blogtober Day 31: HAPPY HALLOWEEN

IT’S HERE IT HAPPENED!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I was going to write this yesterday, but then I realized that the festivities hadn’t actually occurred, and thus I would have nothing to talk about, so here we are.

Guys, I love Halloween. The entire day just seems super spooky no matter what you’re doing. Like, I was driving down the Merritt Parkway and all the yellow leaves were just giving me major fall/Halloween vibes. Anyway.

Yesterday was sort of a miscellaneous day until the night; I read a spooky book with a fall candle. I went to the bank and the grocery store. I did some laundry. And THEN it was HALLOWEEN TIME.

My roommate and I, and one of our friends, and one of her friends from work all went out together (actually to the bar where I work) for some pretzels and beer, and obviously we were super extra the entire time (See below).

basic witch 1

This costume was SO easy but one of my favorites! I’d bought this body suit ages ago and never worn it, so tonight was the night! My twin (sorority) gave me the velvet skirt when she was cleaning out her closet, so the only things I bought were the spider web tights and super extra hat. And honestly, when you’re a little drunk, the netting on the hat is the most fun thing to play with.

All in all, it was a super successful Halloween. We had a ton of fun, ate some good things, and I read a couple super spooky books (definitely read Disney’s Hocus Pocus, thanks Mom!!!!). And I’m definitely breaking this Halloween costume back out for our Halloween event at work on Saturday, and also probably next year TBH.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween! Now that Blogtober has officially ended (thanks for following!) I’m going back to a regular posting schedule, probably Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun. Could change, but that’s what I’m aiming for right now.

Catch ya later my spooky friends!

Blogtober Day 30: My Everyday Fall Makeup

Coming to a close soon, AH! I figured for this post I’d try something really new; I’ve been seeing a bunch of people do this lately, and I wanted to give it a go, so I’m sharing with you my everyday fall makeup. I am not a super talented makeup artist, I literally just like not looking like a goblin when I leave my house everyay. I’d like to get better, but for now, I’m just pretty average. Still going to share it anyway, but just with the disclaimer that it’s pretty average.

Most days I use my Urban Decay Ultimate Basics palette, which just has a bunch of really beautiful matte colors (Thanks for the best Christmas gift ever, Gab!!!). Even when it varies based on specific shades, the essence of what I do everyday is the same. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit.

So here’s an eye makeup-less Kate. I am wearing foundation, and I combed out my eyebrows and such, but that’s about it.

makeup7.JPG

It’s a really easy look, okay? First, I just put a light champagne across my lid and in my inner corners (in the palette it’s called Blow), and then go over the outer half of my lid with matte peachy brown (called Nudie). I take a medium, warm matte brown (Faith) into my crease, but not too exact. It’s more of a widespread sweep of color. Then, I use a dark matte brown directly into my crease in almost a harsher line to make it stand out more (but it’s not actually harsh? I told you I was bad at this). Usually I drag a little of that color down on my lower lashline too.

Then I usually do some really thin eyeliner and a couple coats of mascara, and we end up here:

makeup2.JPG

I usually do bronzer, blush, and a highlight most days because I’m an extra bitch, but that’s just me. So I’ll do a quick all over bronze, a light blush on the apples of my cheeks, and a highlight on my cheekbones, brow bones, tip of my nose, and cupid’s bow. Then I put on whatever lipstick I’m feeling that day, and that’s pretty much it. (Yesterday I was really feeling like an extra bitch so I went with my new, super dark violet-red lip).

And that’s basically it!
makeup1.JPG

It’s not a super crazy look, it’s not hard, and I’m terrible at taking these pictures, BUT I tried something new that made me a little uncomfy so we are just going to roll with it and that’s that.

Anyway, I’ll talk to y’all tomorrow for the LAST day of Blogtober! WOW!

Day 28: Self Care Sunday: Walks in Nature

Ahhh we’re so nearing the end! I’m trying to make it with a strong finish, and there’s definitely a lot I’ve learned about doing Blogtober, but ANYWAY. Today’s Self Care Sunday I actually got the idea for earlier this week. I had woken up and was supposed to go to the gym for a really intense workout, but what I wanted more than anything was a nice, slow, meditative walk in nature. So after arguing with myself for 45 minutes, I decided that going to the gym wouldn’t actually be that productive because A) I would hate myself the entire time, and B) I would be so miserable being there that the workout would probably suck. So in the interest of #SelfCare, I put on my sneakers and set out on a walk down to the riverside.

Something about being out in nature just resets me, and I think this is a pretty universal feeling. The air is clear, the weather is soothing, and something about all the trees really just helps you get in touch with yourself. At least that’s how I feel. So I downloaded a podcast from Kalyn Nicholson, put on a jacket and my sneakers, and went for a walk. I spent a lot of the walk practiciing mindfulness; trying to be cognizant of the way the leaves looked, of how the air felt, of the scent in the air. I found a flower randomly going out of the pavement, and then had a rush of gratitude; if I hadn’t been watching where  I was going, I would’ve missed it entirely.

Literally just growing right out of the sidewalk!

I live right near the Naugatuck River, and there’s this beautiful little river walk I love to run on, and that was where I decided to go take my walk. So I walked down there, saw the sun, smelled the river, and honestly just felt so at peace with the world. It sounds so “hippie-dippy”, but some time in nature is sometimes really just what you need. As much as we all think of meditating as sitting criss-cross on the floor, sometimes it’s just as helpful to walk through nature and be mindful of your surroundings. That was what I focused on Sunday, and as much as I was obsessed with getting home and getting a bunch of tasks finished, I tried to push all that away in favor of just being mindful and enjoying what I was doing in that moment.

Casual morning. I am so grateful to live near something so beautiful.

In the end, I ended up walking 3 miles, which although took me about an hour at a much slower pace than I would’ve normally run, was super cathartic and wonderful. I returned home at peace, feeling at one with the world, and ready to take on the day. Sometimes, we need to just forgive ourselves, take it easy, and do what’s best for our minds versus what we believe is the ultimate end-all-be-all. I’m still learning how to accept that, but it’s something I’m really trying hard to believe in.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this Self Care Sunday, and here’s to making a strong finish with the rest of Blogtober!

Blogtober Day 26: Easy Halloween Costumes on a Budget!

Hey hey hey!

Only five more days until Halloween! FIVE! October has flown by; I can hardly believe we’re less than two months away from Christmas (if you thought I was festive now…HA). Since we’re getting so close (and since I have yet to buy my Halloween costume) I thought it was the perfect time to post some super easy costume ideas. I’m forever and always the person who waits until the very last minute to throw together a costume, which is probably why I never do anything absurdly complex. But hey, why fix what ain’t broken, ya know?

For Halloween last year,  I did a couples costume. It’s a great idea, it just turns out that doing it with my ex was a really bad idea. But the costume turned out great, so I just edited the pictures a little bit to keep them usable…

I did it on snapchat before I knew how to use Photoshop, so it’s not the best, but you get the idea. Super easy costume. I bought a pink cardigan, white button down, and khaki skirt from the thrift store (Savers, Goodwill, etc.). I already had the white sneakers, but they were from Target super cheap. There ya go! Costume #1.

Costume #2 is a creation from my senior year of college. Fun fact: I had actually done this costume as a child, when I was nine or ten, and I thought it was so fun I decided to do it again as an adult!

pippi

It’s Pippi Longstocking! Every time I see this picture, it just reminds me how much I love this character, and how much I really need to read this again. Anyway, really easy costume again. Like the last one, this is all stuff you can get at the thrift store. A brightly colored t-shirt, any kind of jumper (mine was a long denim one that I cut), and a couple of mismatched, tall socks. Black boots would be ideal; I didn’t have any, so these are actually a pair of black tap shoes I found at Goodwill. LOL my roommates got so annoyed with me tapping around all night! For the hair, just get some pipe cleaners or craft wire and braid it into your hair, then bend your braids up. Spray the red color on (I literally used one of the super cheap bright hair sprays you can get in the Halloween section of Target), then hairspray your hair a TON to hold it all together. Dot a few freckles on your cheeks with a brown eyeliner, and you’re all set to go!

This next one isn’t a specific person, per say, but I think it still qualifies as a costume!

clueless.jpg

I actually did this for my 23rd birthday, which was 90’s themed, but I think it works for Halloween too! Just put on anything really that screams 90’s. You can do plaid, scrunchies, brown lipstick, literally whatever you already have. I put on a white t-shirt, a  black sundress, and some black knee socks and flats. I already had some scrunchies lying around, so I did a half up half down side ponytail with a white one, and voila! I would also suggest adding a choker to this ensemble to really make it perfect!

Those are just three quick, easy costume ideas you can pull out of your closet (or your local Goodwill) when you’re in a pinch! I still have to pick mine for this year…if you have any suggestions, leave them below! 🙂

Blogtober Day 19: The Little Things

Happy Blogtober Day 19! We’re definitely getting up there; I can’t believe October is almost OVER! I’m a little sad, but I also love the holidays, so I’m not reaaaally super mad.

Anyway, this is going to be kind of a short little baby post, but I really was just FEELING it, you know? I’ve been really appreciating fall lately and I really just wanted to sit and make a list of all the little things I’ve seen lately that have just made me really grateful for being alive.

When I started thinking about that, I started thinking about how cliche it sounds, but how important it is. Whenever I get too stressed, Bobby tells me to just BREATHE. Stay in the moment, recognize where you are and what you’re doing, and be mindful. It’s great advice, and we should all take it more often. When I take the time to appreciate the little things around me, it makes me an all around more mindful, happy person.

We have such a tendency to get caught up in whatever is going on- work stressors, relationshps, filling our already cluttered schedules with emails and phone calls and coffee dates where we anxiously check the clock the whole time to makes sure we’re not late for our next appointment…we never actually get to ENJOY anything.

So, this week I’ve been making a special effort to really notice and appreciate all of the teeny little things the universe has to offer. Sort of like the world is saying, “Hey, look. It’ll be okay.” Here’s a few examples of things I’ve stopped to notice and appreciate over the past week:

  • a perfectly shaded,  bright red, yellow, and green leaf just laying in the grocery store parking lot. Literally looked like someone had pulled it off the shelf at Michael’s. It was PERFECT.
  • the shade of blue the sky turns right around 9 am when I leave the gym
  • the Glade “Cozy Autumn Cuddle” candle. I buy one (two) every single year and burn through them.
  •  that really nice in-between weather where the air is crisp and chilly, but the sun is shining down, so the entire outdoor climate is just in perfect equilibrium
  • the moment when you first wake up in the morning before you open your eyes where there’s just total peace as you float between asleep and awake
  • a really good, long, belly laugh with your best friends. The kind where you laugh until you can’t breathe and you’re crying and your stomach hurts.
  • the colors of the trees driving down the Merritt Parkway (Connecticut is BEAUTIFUL in the fall. New England does not play.)

I guarantee there will be more, but these are just a few things that make me really happy when I see them and just kind of give me a really good feeling about being alive.

Share with me some of the fun little things that bring you joy in your life! I’d love to hear them!

Blogtober Day 18: My Spooky Apartment!

It’s the time of year for the best part of holidays…DECORATING! My roommate & I have a box of miscellaneous holiday decorations in the closet (I’ll admit Christmas is overflowing to other places) and I love getting to open it and see all the cool things I forgot we had. Of course, I always end up buying more every year, so God Bless Bobby because we’re going to have to have an entire room in our house for all my themed items (Love you babe).

I thought it would be fun to share some of the things that I use to decorate my apartment! I love seeing everyone else’s decorations, so I’m here to hop on the bandwagon!

First is my FAVORITE! I have basically the coolest relatives alive, so one of them sent me this HALLOWEEN SLOTH BLANKET (Shirley you are my HERO), and I literally carry this thing around my apartment with me. I use it at night, at my desk, on my couch, like EVERYWHERE. I’ll honestly keep using it after Halloween, but right now it makes me feel so festive.

SPOOKY BED

NEXT: Spooky candles, spooky Target pumpkins…I’ve definitely shown this before on here, but it’s still one of my favorite setups. And it has changed- my plant babies had to come inside because it’s cold! Also, that candle is called Crisp Fall Night, and it’s so wonderful that I’m burning it without Bobby even though it’s “our” candle. (Sorry not sorry).

SPOOKY NIGHTSTAND

So, most of this stuff is actually here year round, like the little hedgehogs/bat, the black statue, the letters (my roommate & my sorority), and the skeleton succulent, but honestly they fit in so well with all the holiday decor. The vase I threw together today by shoving the little pumpkin garland into a vase; it was too tangled to unknot and hang, so I figured this was a good repurpose. These are just a couple little fake leaf/acorn bundles from the dollar store, but they work great! And of course, the little baby pumpkins from Target.

SPOOKY TABLE

That’s just a little glimpse, mostly because I don’t have many “displays.” There’s little pumpkins here and there all around the apartment, but these are the main areas of focus!

How do you decorate your house? Send me pictures! Tell me! I’m always down to go bigger and better…!
